In this work (next
page) we see a yellow field moving across the computer screen. The field
reflects the suns movements in the sky. The sun is moving all the time,
and its slow movement is incrementally registered by the computer programme.
When the sun rises a yellow field starts to move vertically to the top
of the screen, its movement paced by the suns motion. In the middle of
the day the whole field can be seen and the whole screen appears yellow.
At sunset the field disappears past the top of the screen. The work allows
us to trace the movement in real time as it passes over the places that
we live. It is essentially a digital Sun. The work can be viewed online
in different versions, documenting suns from different places. This version
is, The movement of the sun_ Glasgow.
This internet work has also been translated into object form; a lamp that
can be connected to a computer. The light bulb is programmed to follow
the sun. When the sun rises in the morning the lamp starts to omit light,
intensifying every second, shining brightest in middle of the day. After
this the light begins to fade with the sun, appearing dimmest at sunset.
This is described by the artist as “a physical online piece”.
The web program follows the sun wherever it's shown and therefore it’s
code is site-specific. The artist has adapted the piece for different
places in Sweden, Canada and Finland. He has so far made seven versions
of the program for seven different geographical locations and intends
to continue to produce new ones. He invites us to contact him using the
links below, so as to create versions specific to our own geographical
location.
